Olsztyn, the capital of so-called Country of One Thousand Lakes in
North-Eastern Poland, is the city where one of the most famous world
astronomers - Nicolaus Copernicus - spent part of his life and performed
some astronomical observations.
During 1516–1521 Copernicus resided
at Olsztyn Castle as economic administrator of Warmia province (
Kingdom of Poland ). While there, he wrote a manuscript,
Locationes mansorum desertorum ( Locations of Deserted Fiefs ) and
during the Polish–Teutonic War ( 1519–21 ), Copernicus directed
successful defense of Olsztyn and Warmia by Royal Polish forces.
In the cloister of the Olsztyn Castle
we can still see the authentic proof of Copernicus work - an
astronomical board of dimensions 140x705 cm, an immovable
astronomical instrument, the fourth he possessed. It is a kind of an
empirical table - it has all the qualities that allowed to lead
Copernicus investigations of the inequality of the motion of the
Earth.
